However, despite that millions of Filipinos join the daily lotto draws, a lot of people are not aware about the history of lotto in the Philippines. It was in 1933 when lottery was introduced in the country. Then, a company called the Real Renta de Loteria was founded.

The first lotto draw in the Philippines was held on January 21, 1851 under the Empresa de Reales Loterias Españolas de Filipinas of the Spanish government. There were writings that Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal won in a lottery draw in 1892 when he was exiled in Dapitan. According to write ups, the Filipino hero donated his winnings to an educational project.

Furthermore, during the Spanish-American war, the lottery in the Philippines was forced to stop. The lotto games resumed in the Philippines in 1932 under the American insular government. It was in the pursuit to raise funds to support the projects of the Filipino youths.

In 1935, the late then President Manuel L. Quezon approved the Act No. 301 into law. It created the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office which is now more popularly called PCSO. It is under the national government of the Philippines.

Now, a part of the funds from the PCSO lotto games goes to the charity or social fund of the Office of the President. Here are the divisions of the net receipts of the PCSO:

  • 55% is set aside for the prizes of the lottery games conducted by the PCSO
  • 30% goes to the charity or social fund of the Office of the President
  • 15% is allocated to the operating expenses and the capital expenditures of the PCSO
